The High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) will host one out of four residencies in conjunction with the ExaFLOW project. We invite applications from artists and designers who are interested in computer science and technology to join us as part of the VERTIGO Project of the European Commission. The deadline for applications is May 29, 2017 at 10:00 CET.

We are happy to announce that ExaFLOW project has been selected to be partnering with VERTIGO to offer European artists the opportunity to collaborate with our team at HLRS in Stuttgart. The VERTIGO project is supported by the H2020 Program of the European Commission and aims to support and coordinate synergies between artists, cultural institutions, R&D projects and more stakeholders at the European level. VERTIGO will provide 3 to 6 months of funding to support artists interested in working closely with our research team and developing new approaches to address the technological challenges we are facing.

Artists lead to innovative thoughts for simulation in exascale environment

HLRS to host artist Residencies - Combine Art with Technology in ExaFLOW

The term “exascale computing” describes a future kind of computing system that is capable of at least one exaflop — the equivalent of a billion billion calculations per second. Such an extreme capacity will be a thousandfold faster in comparison to the current generation of petascale computers. However, reaching the exascale will require that scientists and technologists address a host of challenges. We imagine that collaboration with an artist could lead to new and innovative thoughts for our research toward this goal, particularly regarding applications such as image compression and feature detection. Because we are dealing with a quite complex and abstract topic, we would also welcome a way to visualize and explain our research outcomes in an understandable manner. We are looking forward to inspirational thoughts and creative ideas! Click here for further information on the project.
