Join our mini-symposium at the WESC2021: Advances in High-Performance Computing for Wind Energy Applications

Description of the mini-symposium:

Numerical simulation plays a critical role in modern wind turbine design. It gives detailed information of the expected response and performance of wind farms, wind turbines or individual subcomponents under different operating and design conditions. High-resolution computer simulations are essential in our understanding of atmospheric turbulent flows and wind farm wakes to enable farm optimization for increased power extraction. They are also now increasingly necessary to describe the dynamics of very long flexible blades interacting with turbulent flow structures, which can result in vortex-induced vibrations and power output degradation. Therefore, high performance advanced numerical algorithms and computational tools with excellent scalability, which can address such simulations robustly and efficiently, play an important role in future wind turbine design.

This mini symposium is aiming at sharing the state-of-the-art advances in numerical methods, mathematical models and computational techniques in the application of high-performance computing to wind energy. It seems contributions on applications including, but not limited to, turbulence and atmospheric flow, aeroelasticity and fluid-structure interaction, wake and farm modelling. It will survey the landscape of current HPC technology and will aim to identify existing bottlenecks for the adoption of exascale computing by the wind energy community.
