Dassault Aviation

Details

Dassault Aviation is one of the major players in the global aviation industry, with a presence in more than 70 countries across 5 continents, whose varied activities cover several areas of high technology. With 8300 people, Dassault Aviation's primary vocation is the design, development, production, sale and maintenance of aircrafts.

In 2007, the FALCON turnover represented 57% of the overall turnover. In total, Dassault Aviation has sold more than 2000 FALCON aircraft of all types over the last 40 years.

Research and Development activities employ nearly one quarter of the company's workforce. Fundamental and pre-competitive research is usually carried out in close co-operation with universities, research institutes and over industrial partners via a wide international network. Starting in the early 1970's, Dassault Aviation was an initiator in the usage of HPC for aircraft design. It has invested in the development of its own computer codes for simulation and continues to maintain them throughout the different "revolutions" in HPC. Its participation in this project is motivated by the following reasons:

  • To measure, and hopefully to control, the impact of the new heterogeneous parallel architectures on the source code of its simulation software. Both performance and portability will be the drivers in this task.
  • To investigate the capability of the new architectures to provide results in "real-time" for some desktop applications, a specific example of which is “Data Management for preliminary aircraft design”.
