ATEME develops and commercializes AVC/H.264 video compression products for Broadcast and Broadband markets. Its Kyrion real-time video encoder family is used in more than 30 countries to provide High Definition television programs to IP-TV, Digital Terrestrial Television and Contribution customers. KFE, the ATEME file encoder product, offers its compression expertise to archiving, Video-On-Demand, and Internet applications.
Founded in 1991, ATEME is headquartered in Bièvres, France with subsidiaries in Japan, United States and Canada. Worldwide distribution is further realized by partners, distributors and major system integrators like Nokia Siemens Systems. With about 130 employees, including more than 80 engineering experts and researchers, ATEME develops all aspects of its video compression systems, including the key algorithms and their implementation that are the heart of our technology.
The generalization of High Definition contents creates a strong need for shorter encoding time. For this reason, ATEME encoders already make a heavy use of parallel processing using multi-core or multiprocessor architectures, but current solutions have bottlenecks that limit their efficiency in the context of video compression. Innovative methods, such as heterogeneous architectures, provide the hope of a significant performance enhancement. Thus, ATEME’s main interest in this project will be to gain experience from this new technology, and to evaluate the run-time improvements that can be achieved.
