February 2008; Antonio Sánchez, Belén Carro, Stefan Wesner

Abstract:
The provision of value added IT services are clearly a key element of the strategy of all telecommunications operators. Leading innovation in the service domain can become critical for the future success and growth of telecom operators. In this article we discuss a subset of European research projects and how they contribute to the innovation strategy of a large telecom operator. Part of this program is six large projects with a total budget of more than e100 million: Opuce, Akogrimo, Brein, XtreemOs, Amigo, and Beingrid [1]. All of them are Integrated Projects (IP) with up to 75 project partners. We focus on the first three, which are coordinated by Telefonica in collaboration with the High Performance Computing Centre Stuttgart and University of Valladolid. These projects are co-funded by the European Commission Service and Software Architectures, Infrastructures and Engineering Unit [2]. This unit is now responsible for the Software & Services and Grid research areas covered by calls “Open Development Platforms for Software and Services,” “Software and Services,” “Grid-Based Systems for Solving Complex Problems,” and “Advanced Grid Technologies, Systems and Services.”
